Shirt and pant are very common and popular dress for both men and women. So these two garments are manufactured in apparel industry in bulk quantity. Consumption calculation is a very important term in apparel merchandising. Because fabric covers the greatest part of garments costing (more than 60%), so apparel merchandiser should have better knowledge about fabric consumption calculation. Applying consumption formula of shirt and pant, garment merchandisers calculate fabric. In this article I will explain procedure of consumption formula of shirt and pant. At first I will calculate fabric of individual parts of garment and then add all parts.
Consumption Formula of Shirt:
A measurement chart of a shirt is given below:
Measuring Point | Inch |
Full length | 31 |
½ Chest | 22.50 |
Across shoulder | 19 |
Back Yoke height | 3.50 |
Sleeve length | 34.50 |
Sleeve width | 18 |
Sleeve opening | 9 |
Cuff height | 2.50 |
Collar width | 16 |
Collar height (with neck band) | 3.50 |
Chest pocket width | 5 |
Chest pocket length | 6 |
Fabric width | 56 |
Front part:
(Full length + SA) x (1/2 Chest + SA + Placket) [SA = Sewing Allowance]
= (31 + 1) x (22.50+1+2)
= 816 inch2
Back part:
(Full length – Back Yoke Height + SA) x (1/2 Chest + SA)
= (31-3.5+1) x (22.50+1)
= 669.75 inch2
Yoke:
(Yoke height + SA) x (Across shoulder + SA) x 2
= (3.5+1) x (19+1) x 2
= 180 inch2
Sleeve:
(Sleeve length – Cuff height + SA) x (Sleeve width + SA) x 2
= (34.5-2.5+1) x (18+1) x 2
= 1254 inch2
Collar:
(Collar height + SA) x (Collar width + SA) x 2
= (3.5+1) x (16+1) x 2
= 153 inch2
Cuff:
(Cuff height + SA) x (Sleeve opening + SA) x 2 x 2
= (2.5+1) x (9+1) x 4
= 140 inch2
Pocket:
(Pocket length + SA) x (Pocket width + SA)
= (6+1.5) x (5+1)
= 45 inch2
Total Fabric (in inch2) = Front + Back + Yoke + Collar + Sleeve + Cuff + Pocket
= 816 + 669.75 + 180 + 1254 + 153 + 140 + 45
= 3257.75 inch2
Fabric consumption per dozen:
…….3257.75 x 12
= ——————- + 5%
……….56 x 36
= 20.36 yds/dzn (Answer)
Consumption Calculation of a Pant:
A measurement chart of a pant is given below:
Point of Measurement | Inch |
Full length | 43.25 |
½ Thigh | 12 |
Waist band height | 1.25 |
½ Waist | 18 |
Fly length | 5 |
Fly width | 1 |
Belt loop length | 1.25 |
Belt loop width | 0.5 |
No. of belt looks | 8 |
Pocket length | 9 |
Pocket width | 7 |
Fabric width | 46 |
Pocketing fabric width | 38 |
Leg panel:
Length x Width x 4
= (Full length – Waist band/Belt height + SA) x (1/2 Thigh + SA) x 4
= (43.25-1.25+2) x (12+1) x 4
= 2288 inch2
Waist band:
(Waist band height + SA) x (1/2 Waist + SA) x 2 x 2
= (1.25+1) x (18+1) x 4
= 171 inch2
Total fabric (in inch2) = Leg panel + Waist band
= 2288 + 171
= 2459 inch2
Fabric consumption per dozen
2459 x 12
= ———————– + 5%
48 x 36
= 17.93 yds/dzn
Pocketing fabric:
(Pocket length + SA) x (Pocket width + SA) x 2 x 2
= (9+1) x (7+1) x 4
= 320 inch2
Pocketing fabric consumption per dozen
320 x 12
= —————– + 5%
38 x 36
= 2.95 yds/dzn
Answer:
Body fabric = 17.93 yds/dzn
Pocketing fabric = 2.95 yds/dzn
